kempton court social club

Kempton Court is a sheltered housing scheme in Sale, Gtr Manchester. The residents have joined together to form Kempton Court social club which aims to promote activities for all of the residents at the scheme. Here, Doreen Minors, secretary of the committee explains what the residents have been up to:

We have a number of projects running at the moment. Over the last three years we have introduced IT skills to the residents. We have secured funding to provide 2 computers with broadband internet access (right) and currently receive regular training in basic computer skills from North Trafford College. We are working towards creating our own website and providing free email addresses for our residents.

We have also teamed up with local schools through a project called 'Intergen' to provide support for children leaning to read. This has helped local children and helped the residents involved grow in confidence.

We also work along-side Trafford and Salford Health Promotion Team to provide a weekly Hips and Hearts Keep Fit program. This helps our residents stay active and helps promote independence. Two of our residents have also trained as 'mentors' and help run the program.

For some of our more frail residents, we run a scheme in partnership with Sale West Healthy Living Network, to take people to a local restaurant for a healthy meal once per week. Volunteers help escort the residents to and from the restaurant. For some, this provides a welcome respite from their meals on wheels service and can be the only time they leave the building.

The scheme recently had a very successful supporting people validation visit, being awarded 3x grade 'A's and 3 grade 'B's.
